Irish Auctioneers and BER Referral Fees
There is an interesting but disturbing conversation taking place on www.boards.ie with regards to auctioneers and the practice of recommending BER assessors. Some BER assessors are being approached by auctioneers with a proposal that the auctioneer gets a % referral fee.

The SEI have put out the idea that a BER aseesement costs 500 euros, I have seen lower prices being mentioned on boards.ie in the past. Some discussions have outlined that a BER asessmenr takes about 3.5 - 4 hours. 500 Euros for 3.5 hrs is good money, if you can get it.

I find it hard to swallow the statement '3.5 - 4 hours. 500 Euros for 3.5 hrs is good money'. For a 2 up 2 down, I charge what many assessors charge, roughly 190 Euros. For that consider travel, documenting the house, filling in the SEI paperwork, photos, filing, spending 5 hours inputting the data, properly assessing U Values, rather than always relying on the default values, then paying the 25 Euro plus VAT levy, and following it up with sitting down with the client to use my architectural knowledge to well advise on improvements.... and at the end of the day I am competing with others that charge only 99 Euro. Why isn't the cost for all this regulated and BER's enforced?

I agree thats there needs to be some standardization or clear code of practice that the general public understand what is involved with the BER process and what they should expect.
The general perception of the process and what is involved is not appreciated or understood. An independent regulator to set standard fees and levels of service etc would help
