Apple IPad – Can it usurp e-ink?

The Apple IPad has been launched and the hype reached new levels. Steve Jobs knows how to market and perform a product launch. It is only when the excitement dies down and the Apple Acolytes have returned to their temples to worship at their beautifully designed altars and pews will we figure out if the device is “worth it”.

My initial reaction are as follows:
  • How will it perform outside in sunshine?, e-ink does a great job from a readability point of view
  • Power management, a e-ink devices such as as the Sony reader and the kindle can be used for a very long time between charges
  • Will they allow you to  read existing e-books, and e-books published from other stores
  • DRM are we going to see Apple take a similar approach as they did with the Ipod, lock it down first then slowly open it up
  • I can see why news papers like it you could sign up via itunes to get your daily news paper or monthly magazine subscription.
So the I am still skeptical and will probably wait 2 – 3 years for the features and technology to stabilise and the prices to drop.

Review of IEEE Design of High-Performance Microprocessor Circuits

The IEEE book on Design of High-Performance Microprocessor Circuits has just recently landed on my desk. Having read a few articles and examined the table of contents I can recommend it as a good reference book.
The book is divided into several sections that covers topic areas such as
Technology issues,
Circuit styles for logic,
Memory system design,
Interconnect and I/O, Reliability,
CAD Tools and Test.
The book can be purchased from a variety of book sellers. I purchased mine from

IEEE wireless standards book

IEEE standards press have just published a book titled
“Wireless Communication Standards”
The book includes
– Comprehensive overview of WLAN, WPAN, and WMAN (IEEE 802.11™, 802.15™, and 802.16™) standards
– Discusses deployment of WLAN networks
– Includes over 100 figures and diagrams
– Identifies research problems
– Explains current business trends
– Provides understanding of future standards development
I will be adding this to my essential reading list now selling books to Irish consumers

Up until recently if an Irish consumer wanted to buy books online they would use, this meant incurring a hefty shipping charge in the region of 3 – 5 euro. who sell cd’s and games online have now started selling books. Unlike amazon they quote the price in Euros and include shipping with the price.
I think I am going to have to get more book shelves.

ARM textbook – System on Chip by Furber

My supervisor has recommended Furbers’s book for ARM development its called ARM System-on-chip Architecture
The reviews look good as the book covers the following
– presents and discusses the major issues of system-on-chip design, including memory hierarchy, caches, memory management, on-chip buses, on-chip debug and production test
– provides an overview of the ARM processor family, enabling the reader to decide which ARM is best for the job in hand
– describes the ARM and Thumb programming models, enabling the designer to begin to develop applications
– covers all the latest ARM products and developments, including StrongARM, the ARM9 and ARM10 series of cores, and the ARM-based SoC components at the heart of Ericsson’s Bluetooth technology, the Psion Series 5 PDA and Samsung’s SGH2400 GSM handset
– includes details on the AMULET asynchronous ARM cores and the AMULET3H asynchronous SoC subsystem

Going Postal – Terry Pratchett

I have just finished reading Terry Pratchetts latest book Going Postal (Discworld S.). I am an avid fan of the disc world series and his latest book is well up to the standard of the previous books. I just hope he can get the chandeliers back….
Here’s a Synopsis
Moist von Lipwig was a con artist and a fraud and a man faced with a life choice: be hanged, or put Ankh-Morpork’s ailing postal service back on its feet.It was a tough decision. But he’s got to see that the mail gets though, come rain, hail, sleet, dogs, the Post Office Workers Friendly and Benevolent Society, the evil chairman of the Grand Trunk Semaphore Company, and a midnight killer. Getting a date with Adora Bell Dearheart would be nice, too.Maybe it’ll take a criminal to succeed where honest men have failed, or maybe it’s a death sentence either way.Or perhaps there’s a shot at redemption in the mad world of the mail, waiting for a man who’s prepared to push the envelope…
