On Slashdot TuringTest writes ""The user-centric UI webzine" UserInstinct has published a usability overview of the latest version of the GNOME desktop. While their conclusions and recommendations are not mind-blowing, it includes two interesting appendices with a survey of new users (and their reactions to the system) and a list of common tasks of modern computer users with a commentary on how Gnome performs in each one.

I think this is a welcome development, with the European launch of tadpole linux laptops earlier this year at Tipperary Institute the slow but every gathering momentum of Linux rolls on..

Novell reveals more of their open source strategy

BOSTON - As part of its transition to an open source software model, Novell will scale back its investment in some proprietary technology that competes with open source alternatives.

The company will make only minimal investments in its BorderManager VPN and other products in favor of open source alternatives as it tries to create a blend of open and closed source products, said Alan Nugent, Novell's CTO, at last week's Usenix conference in Boston.

They will instead focus on developing complementary technologies such as storage networks and grid computing. Customers that use Bordermanager (which includes Tipperary Institute) may in the future be using a product that incorporates open source transparently.

The company is planning announcements for the LinuxWorld Conference & Expo next month, and the BrainShare Conference in September,
